Hands-On Exercise - Digital Camera

This week Marcus wasn't here so after the quiz we spent the entire class doing lighting setups that people had come up with for the Lighting Assignment. We started with mine and then did Raphaël's setup.

SETUP 1 - REPLICATING THE SHOT IN ELVIS

The Result...

How we recreated it

Camera

RED on sticks with 25mm lens

4K, 24fps, 3200K, ISO 800, shutter 1/48.

Lighting

2K LIGHT, with silk diffusion, black flag and cookie

ARRI 650K with silk diffusion, black flag

Small pepper on dimmer and small black flag

Art Department - Set Dec.

We recreated the wall with 2 4x4 floppies side by side on C-stands at the far edge of the

class.

To add depth, we added 1 of the studio set boards at an angle on the far right of the subject

to add more texture to the scene. That's where the pepper comes in.

LIGHTING

In my original plan I had 3 lights because I was unsure if the objects on the table were being lit by a third light source or not and uppon experimentation I saw that it was light by the same light as the light hitting the side of Tom Hank's face. We took that light out and lit the subject with only 2 lights.

2K LIGHT SETUP

ree

2K light setup pointing towards the cam with a black flag to block out spill on the subject and avoid camera flares. To soften the light a silk is added and then in front of all that we added a cookie.

ARRI 650K SETUP

PEPPER LIGHT SETUP

To add texture we added on of the studio set boards horizontally. To light it we added a pepper light on the floor. We hooked it up on a dimmer and used a small black flag to block out spill and focus the light only onto the board.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

I was not used to having a lot of say and authority like that and it was kind of hard to not seem indecisive but it was a good experience to lead a team through this setup. I found out I like to boss people around. Power is a little fun.

SETUP 2 - RAPHAËL'S BACKLIGHT SETUP

Raphaël came up with her own lighting for a scene she wanted to shoot. We explored her lighting plan as well.

ree

She had a 3 light setup with 2 different color temperature and wanted to have her subject more backlit.

HOW WE CREATED THE SHOT
Camera

RED on sticks with 50mm lens

4k, RC: 8:1

24fps, ISO 800, shutter 1/48, 3200K

Lighting

2K LIGHT with 1/2CTB and a cookie in front of it (side light on right side of the subject)

650K ARRI with 1/2 CTO bounced off a silver reflective 4x4 bounce setup on a C-stand (backlight of the character)

650K ARRI with 1/2 CTO angled on left side of the subject, a flag is added to avoid light spilling.

Art Direction

Only a table and a chair were used

NOTES AND COMMENTS

I think she managed to get what she wanted out of her shot. She wanted to see lighting with 2 different color temperatures and how that would look. It was interesting to see. Personally, it isnt too much my style but it is a good tool to have in the toolbox if ever it is needed. The atmosphere was nice and I liked working with everyone doing these 2 setups.
